Provides support and care for people living with HIV/AIDS, for their families, partners and carers. Counselling, referral, testing information, condoms, lubricants, safe-sex information, needle exchange, posters, stickers, brochures, information for school and university projects, volunteer training, support groups, in-service training of staff in other agencies, police liaison and liaison with sex workers are provided. SHAIDS provides clinic services which offer STD checkup and treatment and HIV antibody testing and management. A full range of resource material is available in relation to sexual health; workshops are available for community groups on request; a counsellor is available for clients of the service as well as partners and families A telephone counselling service is also available. Primary target groups are men who have sex with men, people living with HIV/AIDS, sex workers, injecting drug users and gay men. Hepatitis C counselling and support and contact with local hepatitis C groups are available from Sydney (see phone number above). A youth clinic is conducted on Wednesdays from 2pm to 6pm; appointments are not necessary. Outreach services are provided to Byron Bay at the hospital. Wheelchair access. 8.30am to 5pm, Mon to Fri.

Accommodation is provided in a non-detoxification program for people wishing to be drug free. Clients must be over 20 years old, single with no children and drug or alcohol dependent for three years or more. There are 24 beds and care is provided for 24 hours. Half-way houses are available in Byron Bay and Sydney. Also runs Northern Rivers Gambling Counselling Service. See entry. $400 (eighty per cent of full Centrelink benefit). Community Health Nurse provides nursing care in the home, usually aged care, wounds, diabetes and palliative care. Usually free but there may be a fee for hire of equipment.
Early Childhood Nursing service works to improve the health and well-being of young children and monitors the physical and developmental growth of babies. Immunisation programs, childhood education classes and information about nutrition, parenting, post-natal depression, behavioural problems and domestic violence. Wheelchair access. The voluntary hospice service assist clients in the final stages of terminal illness, who already have a primary carer so that they can remain at home. Practical assistance is given in nursing care, complementary therapy, respite for the primary carer. Is not a religious organisation. Emergency respite is available. Disabled access. The Isolated Patients Travel and Accommodation Assistance Scheme gives financial assistance with travel and accommodation expenses for people referred for specialist medical treatment who need to travel 200kms one way. Forms from the GP, Community Health and IPTAAS Office. Air travel and train sleeper requires prior approval by doctor phoning direct to IPTAAS office. IPTAAS can advance clients payment for travelling expenses but it is means tested. 8.30am to 5pm, Mon to Fri.
